Son of Charles Frederick Unthank and Caroline Unthank nee Scott of Tyabb, Victoria.
2 June 1916 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion and with the rank of Private.
27 May 1917 - wounded. Wound to the right arm and transferred to England on 8 June 1917.
Commenced return to Australia on 27 September 1917 aboard HT Suevic disembarking on 18 November 1917
24 December 1917 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as wounded

During 1927c Alexander married Evelyn May Free in Victoria.
