Enlisted as David Genge - correct name David Fitzroy Gain, the third eldest of eleven children of Edward Chubb Turpin Gain (1859-1905), a chemist from South Africa and his New Zealand born wife, Catherine Cameron Young (1867-1938).

Three of his brothers, 1426 Sergeant Edward Percival Gain MM (1885-1952), 554 Corporal Arthur Henry Gain (1894-1959) and 2335 Private Reginald Stanhope Gain (1896-1958) also served in the A.I.F. during World War I.
