Clement Archibald William Hill was born in 1888 in Corryong, Victoria, to Archibald Hill and Emily, nee Collins.
Clement was a prominent footballer in the Upper Murray, playing and leading the Federal Football Club to several wins over arch-rivals Corryong in the 1914 season.
On 13th March 1916, he enlisted at Tallangatta, Victoria. At the time, he was a single, 27-year-old labourer from Corryong, Victoria. He was allocated Regimental Number 1197 and placed in D Company of the 37th Battalion. Clement gave his next of kin as father, Archibald Hill. After initial training, he embarked on HMAT A34 Persic at Melbourne, Victoria, on 3rd June 1916.
During his enlistment period, he was also a member of the 39th Battalion, being transferred to that unit on 12th October 1918. On 1st August 1919, he returned to Australia aboard HMAT A8 Argyllshire, with the rank of Private. He was discharged on 6th November 1919, being awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service during the war.
Clement Archibald William married Helen (Nellie) Grace Mildren in 1925. The couple would move to Richmond before owning a store in Braeside. They would have two sons, although one, Jack, would tragically pass away when he was only three years old in 1933. Clement died on 11th April 1940 at Caulfield Military Hospital, Victoria and was buried in Cheltenham Pioneer Cemetery, Victoria.
