Peter Adam Milne
Peter Adam Milne, son of James Milne and Mary Gibbs was born 30 January 1879 at Mepunga, Victoria, Australia.
Peter was the second youngest of James and Mary’s eight children (4 boys, 4 girls) and Peter’s early years were spent in and around the Mepunga, Allansford and Warrnambool area.
During the Boer War, Peter age 23 years and farmer of Mepunga, enlisted in the 6th Battalion Australian Commonwealth Horse for Service in South Africa on 26 April 1902 in Melbourne, Victoria; Regimental Number 388. Peter’s service lasted 106 days, however it is not clear from Peter’s National Archives of Australia Boer War Service record if he actually served in South Africa or remained in Australia during that period.
Peter joined the Victorian Police Force on 5 January 1904 and was initially stationed at Russell Street, Melbourne before being transferred to the Police Station at Ballarat East, Victoria.
Peter was very briefly married in 1905 (no children were born from this marriage) and was divorced prior to his 1916 enlistment in the Australian Infantry Forces.
During WW1, Peter was working as a Police Constable at Dunolly Police Station, Victoria approximately 60km west of Bendigo when he put his police career on hold to enlist in the Australian Infantry Forces.
Peter age 37, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 3 May 1916 at Melbourne, Victoria, serving with 6th Battalion, 20th Reinforcement. Service Number: 6388. Rank/s: Private, Lance Corporal, Act/Sergeant.
Peter embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia 11 September 1916 on board HMAT A14, ‘Euripides’ arriving at Plymouth, England 26 October 1916.
During WW1, Peter served mainly in France (Boulogue, Abbeville, Rouelles, Havre). Peter was repatriated to Australia arriving in Melbourne, Victoria on 31 May 1919 and was discharged 8 July 1919 at Melbourne.
Peter was awarded the Victory Medal, No 51946 and British War Medal No 53065
On returning to Australia and whilst resuming his police career, Peter lived with his younger brother, John Douglas Milne, a fellow policeman and John’s wife Agnes at the Police Station, Warragul Road, Oakleigh. Peter was initially stationed in Melbourne then transferred to Traralgon, Victoria during the 1920s before moving to Trafalgar, Victoria circa 1930 where he worked until his retirement from the police force in about 1935 at age 56.
Peter remained in Trafalgar, living at Seven Mile Road until his death in November 1954. Peter remained close to his two older sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Jemima and their families who lived in and around Trafalgar.
Peter did not remarry.
Peter died 14 November 1954 age 75 at Trafalgar, Victoria. Cremated 16 November 1954 and his ashes initially interred at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, Springvale, Victoria.
