Prior to joining the army in 1914, Wilfred was a mechanic. He also was an apprentice in his home town of Stafford and served in the imperial yeomanry for 5 years. Wilfred was son to Mrs Mary Franks and Mr J Franks and was not married during his enlistment. His enlistment papers state that he was in perfect health and therefore he was fit to go overseas to fight for the British Empire. On the 20th of October, Wilfred boarded Transport A11 Ascanius as a part of the 10th battalion. Wilfred seemed to be a proud member of the British empire as he served for several years.
