George was the eldest of five children of Nathaniel Harvey McMillan/MacMillan (born 1847 in Argyll, Scotland) and Julia Currie (born 1853 in Argyllshire, Scotland). Nathaniel (a Joiner) and Julia (a General Servant) married in 1871 in Argyll, Scotland, where they lived until 1887 when they and some of their children immigrated ot Brisbane, QLD on board the Peebleshire - some children remained in Scotland with their Grandparents until a later date. Nathaniel and Julia settled in Brisbane, QLD where Nathaniel was a Carpenter, until he returned to Scotland in 1903.

George was apprenticed to his father in Brisbane, QLD for five years, and following his father's departure for Scotland in 1903, he, his mother and some siblings relocated to Perth, WA. George was a Carpenter in Perth WA in 1911 when he married Sarah Harriet Gibbs (born 1800 in Perth, WA). In July 1916 George enlisted in the AIF, serving as a Private (Service No:6121) with 28th Infantry Battalion. Hospitalised with Influenza, George returned to WA in December 1918 and was Discharged in February 1919.
