Rev. Peter Hayes, of Victoria Park, has been appointed Archdeacon of Bunbury. Archdeacon Hayes was ordained in All Hallows' College in 1902, having studied at St Bede's College, Manchester, and St John's College, Waterford. Coming to Western Australia in 1902, he was sent by Bishop Gibney to Kalgoorlie, where he remained until 1906. From 1906 to 1911 he was assistant priest in Bunbury. In 1911 Archbishop Clune appointed, him Administrator of the Cathedral, which onerous position he held until 1916, when he went as chaplain with the A.I.F. Forces, and was on active service until the conclusion of the war. Returning to the West in1919. he was appointed priest in charge of Victoria Park, where, under his zealous ministry, a great and growing parish has flourished.
The Rt. Rev. Monsignor Peter Hayes, parish priest of Bunbury, died in a private hospital in Perth last night. He came to Australia in 1902 and in 1911 became Administrator of St. Mary's Cathedral. From 1916 to 1919 he served in the forces and was mentioned in dispatches. He was appointed parish priest at Bunbury in 1929 and was honoured by the Holy See with the title of Monsignor in 1938. Solemn Office and Solemn High Mass, at which the Archbishop of Perth (Dr. Prendiville) will preside, will be held at St. Patrick's, Bunbury, at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow.
