FREDERICK ALEXANDER BRYANT

FREDERICK ALEXANDER BRYANT (1900-1971) born at Delegate, son of Benjamin and Rachel also Bryant nee White. Frederick enlisted to serve in WW1 as Private 2872, Australian Corps Working Party on August 30th, 1916. After scanty training he embarked on October 25th, 1916 on the HMAT A11 Ascanius and disembarked at Devonport on December 28th. The battlefields of France, and the 56th Battalion, became his home for the next two years. Did he know that many of the men in his unit were cousins? He landed in France on July 9th, 1917 in time for the major battle at Polygon Wood. It was discovered in May 1918 that he was Underage at the time of his enlistment – The army had received a letter from his mother. The signatures of the parents on his enlistment papers are written in the same hand. He was returned to Australia in January 1919 on board the Orsvova. He received his discharge of April. 10Th, 1919 – Medically unfit. He was sent to the Garrison No 4 Australian General Hospital at Randwick. He was awarded the Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. The HMAT Ascanius was of 10,048 tons, with an average cruising speed of 13 knots. The vessel was owned by the Ocean Steam Ship Co.
