Son of Henry Hayes and Annie Jane Hayes nee Short of Maryborough Road, Gympie, QLD. Brother of Herbert Richard Hayes who died of wounds on 27 August 1915 while serving with the 15th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Lone Pine Memorial, Panel 46 and Walter James Hayes who return to Australia 1919 have served with the 41st Battalion
Commenced return to Australia on 22 July 1917 aboard HT Nestor disembarking on 24 September 1917 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane
