His younger brother 1013 Pte. Norman Stanley Layton 14th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Gallipoli 2 May 1915, age 20. He has a Special Memorial in Courtney's and Steel's Post Cemetery.
Charles simply went missing at Fromelles on 19 July 1916. His death was confirmed in September 1917. Their father, Harry Layton, who played in Richmond's first ever VFA game in 1885, and had passed away during September 1915.
Their mother Mary Jane Layton was left with her 8 remaining children, residing in Burnley Street, Richmond, Victoria.
