His brother, 2789 Pte Daniel Wallace Palmer, 49th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Messines, Belgium, 7 June 1917.
Francis Palmer arrived on Gallipoli 4 September 1915. He was wounded when a piece of shell hit him the head on 11 December 1915, concussing him and causing a compound fracture to his skull. The fracture was repaired in the dressing station at Anzac and he was evacuated to Egypt. He was invalided back to Australia on 3 March 1916. His brother 1789 Private Richard Gordon Palmer 15th Battalion AIF was also on the same ship, having suffered a severe wound to his leg.
Another brother, 3170 Private James Palmer 9th Battalion AIF, was also wounded during 1917 and returned to Australia early 1919.
