Halvor James HANSEN (“Toby”) was born on 04.02.1883 at Jamestown to Anders Hans (Andrew) (1854-1923) and Martha HANSEN (nee TREGEAR but also previously married name of SWEETLAND- 1848-1913 and GREEN).

Halvor James HANSEN first joined the AIF on 17.05.1915 and was allocated service number 2885.  He was allocated to the 3rd reinforcements, 27th Battalion but was discharged due to an existing back injury reported on 17.12.1915.  His file also noted chronic alcoholism.  He was listed as a deserter from the armed forces per SA Police Gazette 08.09.1915.  The discharge was made official on 15.01.1916.  He was declared as permanently unfit. HOWEVER

He rejoined AIF on 10.02.1917 and was given new service number of 7246.  He joined the 24th reinforcements of the 10th Battalion.   The battalion embarked to France on 23.06.1917.   He was seriously wounded in France on 28.06.1918 with a gunshot to the arm, chest and back which fractured bones in France requiring evacuation to England.   He re-embarked back in Australia on 22.11.1918 and was formerly discharged as medically unfit on 01.02.1919.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
