His younger brother, 2329 Pte. Gilbert William Heathcote 38th Battalion AIF, was killed in action three months later at Passchendaele in Belgium on 13 October 1917, at only 18 years age.
Robert James Heathcote and Gilbert William Heathcote had enlisted on the same day in April 1916 and both served with the 38th Battalion.
They were the sons of Gilbert Powel Wyndham Heathcote and Emily Ruth Behsmann, of Wentworth, New South Wales. Their father had died in 1901 when they were very young and their mother had married again.
