Son of Thomas Queenan and Mary Queenan of London, England. Brother of George Queenan who returned to Australia on 13 June 1919 having served with the 2nd Motor Transport Company.

Next of kin was given as his brother W. Queenan of St. Josephs School, Orpington Kent, England.

Later changed to his wife Marian Rachael Queenan nee Forsythe of Victoria Road, Bournesmouth, England. Denis and Rachel married on 12 June 1917 in Hampshire, England. Registrar officiated. Both were  sometimes known as Queenan Durrant.

Previously served with the Grenadier Guards but after six weeks he was found to be medically unfit.

Commenced return to Australia on 10 January 1918 aboard HT Corinthic diembarking on 7 March 1918.
