Son of Edmund Joseph Cooper and Sarah Jane Fleet formerly Cooper nee Knox of Leicester Street, Fitzroy, Victoria.Brother of William Knox Cooper who returned  to Australia on 31 December 1916 having served with the 6th Battalion

Commenced return to Australia on 18 February 1918 aboard HT Llanstephan Castle disembarking on 16 April 1918

During 1930c Edgar married Winifred Clara Elizabeth Orr in Victoria
