Biography contributed by Saint Ignatius' College

Before Service:

William Frazer was a 32-year-old man born in Kangaroo Island, Australia. He grew up in Kangaroo Island and lived there most his life. Because of this we can assume he went to Kingscote school in Kangaroo Island. He was single upon joining the war and had not been married. He was below average height by 3 inches at only 5ft4.5in. William was a Protestant and worked as a cook. William enlisted in February 1915 and spent his first 2 months as a soldier in training before embarking on the A20 HMAT Horrata heading to Gallipoli.

Life Throughout the War:

William’s ship landed on the shores of Gallipoli on the 17/9/15 and joined the 10th battalion. After three months of fighting he was admitted into the 3rd hospital, where he was there for 5 days. He was discharged from the hospital on the 17th of December and embarked for Alexandria, Egypt.

After an 11-day trip William made a quick stop over at Alexandria and disembarked the next day where he was admitted to the 2nd hospital in Cairo. William suffered from otitis media, an ear infection, causing inflammatory in the middle ear. After 17-days in hospital he was discharged and left for depot in the city of Helwan where he would convalesce for 39 days.

After he recovered, he was transferred to Giza where he joined the 3rd training battalion. After two months of training in Giza William embarked for England on the 24/6/16 and went straight to hospital on the 3/7. After he was discharged from the hospital, he committed an offence of being absent with-out leave for two days but was later docked with 2 days pay.

On the 28/7, he joined the 6th camp of Perham downs. He was there for 5 months training and standing on guard in case of an emergency. After 5 months he travelled overseas to France on the 17/12. As soon as he landed in France he was sent to the hospital with lumbago, a muscle pain. He was later discharged from the hospital after 11 days with myalgia another form of muscle pain. His injuries were considered too severe for him to serve any longer at the front so he was marked for medical discharge.

He left England to return to Australia on 4/5/17 and was at a camp for a month before being discharged from the war altogether. He was discharged due to being medically unfit with multiple diagnoses and an axe injury he sustained in March earlier the year. William’s service concluded on the 8/8/17.

After the War:

There is not much said about William’s life after the war except that he got married to his wife Evelyn Frazer.
