Son of William James Underwood and Margaret Underwood of Hawthorn Cottage, Inverell, NSW

21 May 1916 - enlisted at Narrabri, NSW with the 34th Battalion and rank of Private.

12 October 1917 - wound to the head. Rejoined unit on 10 January 1918.

5 April 1918 - wound, second occasion, flesh wound to the arm. Transferred to England on 12 April 1918.

17 June 1919 - discharged at the 2nd Military District

Commenced return to Australia on 21 March 1919 aboard HT Kildonian Castle disembarking on 9 May 1919. 

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

During 1921c Walter married Annie A. Orchard in Inverell, NSW.
