John Grayson was born on 30 Aug 1881 at Meringandan, Queensland, a son to Robert Grayson and Mary Jane Grayson (nee Ferguson). When he enlisted in 1901 for the Boer War he noted his N.O.K. as R. Grayson at Woolloongabba. He married Amelia Addicott on 11 Dec 1901 in Brisbane and they had 7 children.
He served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 118 in the 6th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 4127 in the 25th Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1. When he enlisted for WW1 in 1915 he noted on the Attestation Paper he had previously served with the QIB in South Africa. He was killed in action in France in 1916.
