C. R. MERRILLEES joined A.A.M.C. on 23rd August 1915 and embarked with rank of Captain in December 1916. He was in March 1917 attached to 16th Field Ambulance but upon his arrival in France on 29th September 1917 he was transferred to 13th Field Ambulance and took part in the Battle of Passchendaele. On 28th January 1918 he was promoted to Major and transferred to 4th Div. Engineers as R.M.O. He took part in the Battle of Dernancourt and
operations on the Somme till May 1918 when he was wounded. He then took part in the Battle of Hamel on 4th July and in August was
appointed R.M.O. to 13th Battalion and took part in the Battle of Amiens on 8th August when he was again wounded but only slightly and was able to take part in the further operations against the Hindenburg Line up till Armistice. He returned to Australia in August and his appointment was terminated on 17th September 1920.
