Benno was the son of Charles and Ernstine Waldhuter [nee Mattiske]. Benno
left Fremantle with his unit on board A16 Port Melbourne on 23 October 1916.
He undertook further training until 9 May when his unit was sent to France.
On 8 June Benno was wounded in action, but was able to rejoin his unit on 15
July. His mother wrote to Army Base Records in Melbourne on 13 July,
enquiring about Benno’s condition and a week later received the standard
reply about how he could be contacted in writing.
Benno was hospitalised with a septic knee on 12 September 1918 and
rejoined his unit on 8 December. He returned to Australia on the
Swakopmund on 22 April 1919, disembarked on 30 July and was discharged on
7 September. Benno Fred Waldhuter died on 14 April 1981.
