William Woods Smith
William Woods Smith was born at Blumberg {Birdwood} on the 20th October 1881. The 34-year-old machinist enlisted in Adelaide on the 17th October 1916, leaving Australia on board the Afric on the 7th November 1916, along with his brothers Alfred Lowe Smith and Allan Charles Smith – all three brothers gave their next of kin as their mother, Mrs Elizabeth Smith of Balhannah. Smith arrived at Etaples, France on the 16th March 1917. On the 28th April he was hospitalised with a hernia until the 13th May, rejoining his unit the 50th Battalion on the 24th May. He was re-admitted to hospital in Etaples with hernia from the 20th to the 22nd June.
Smith was transferred to England on the 16th September from where he was returned to Australia due to his persisting hernia condition. He arrived back in Australia on the 28th December and was discharged as medically unfit on the 14th January 1918.
