Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Mimi Cemetery, N.S.W.
On the 12th October 1917, Private George Clark, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1095), miner from the corner of Hall and High Streets, Cessnock, New South Wales, was killed by an enemy artillery shell fragment, left in a shell hole, age 29 years 2 months, 1st Battle of Passchendaele, Belgium.
Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 2nd August 1888 to George Walker (died?), and Isabella Clark nee Robertson (died 14.3.1929, Cessnock, N.S.W., age 77, mother of 4?, sleeping at Left Hand Side, Section 08, Plot 012), from corner of Hall and High Streets, Cessnock, New South Wales. Note: headstone inscription incorrectly state date of death 14.5.1929.
George enlisted on the 28th January 1916, age 27 years 4 months, at West Maitland, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.
Reported Missing in Action 12.10.1917.
Reported Killed in Action 21.2.1918.
George’s name has been inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 23), Belgium.
Place of Association - Cessnock, New South Wales, Australia.
Mr. Clark’s name has also been inscribed on the Cessnock War Memorial.
I have placed poppies at the memorialised Clark gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of George for God, King & Country. Left Hand Side, Section 08, Plot 012.
