Robert (‘Rob’) Hamilton Cleland became Registered Player Number 0416 at VFA club Port Melbourne in 1909 and went on to play in 97 senior games until the 1915 season. He then enlisted with the AIF at the age of  26 years & 3 months on 4 January 1916.

Robert survived the war but was severely wounded in the back & legs during action on 3 February 1917 and was transported for hospitalization in England and then much later on 2 December 1919 he was transported to Australia for continued hospital treatment (he reached Australia on 22 January 1920). Robert Cleland was discharged from the AIF on 26 April 1920.
