Private Walter Alexander Podmore (145) was born at Yarraville Footscray, Melbourne and was educated at Kalgoorlie.
He decided to enlist at the age of 26 and is the son of Walter and the late Adelaide Podmore, of Sussex-Street, Victoria Park. Walter enlisted on the 30th December, 1915, and on the 6th June 1916, he left for England with the 44th Battalion. Upon his arrival he was instantly sent to Lark Hill Camp, to do special training he then preceded, onto France on the 19th November 1916.
Walter was fatigues for the first month, and on the 29th December he was sent into action for the first time. He was taken out of the front line in March 1917 due to him being shell-shocked he was put to work repairing boots for the other soldiers and other fatigues/duties behind the line. He was then sent back into action in September, 1918 and a month later was promoted to Sergeant.
Five months after the Armistice he was sent to England and on the 22nd June, 1919 he boarded the S.S. Windhuk for Australia.
Walter was discharged on 22nd September 1919 and returned home to his family his wife Sarah Cole and son.
