Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Ernest was the son of John Way U'Ren and Mary Ann U'Ren, of North Carlton, Victoria.
The 8th F.C.E. was waiting in Ypres from 20 October 1917 prior to withdrawal finally for a spell and billeted in a long shed containing closely packed bunks, adjacent the P.O. and Baths. During shelling about 1.30am on 27 October 1917 a 5'9" or 6" got home. Total casualties 23 or 24 about half of whom were killed outright or died of wounds. All casualties had been together for roughly 12 months. In fact, 11 men of the unit are recorded as dying on or soon after 27 October 1917.
