The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 34th name inscribed is Private John Thomas.

On the Wednesday afternoon of the 10th October 1934, Private John Thomas, 34th Battalion (Reg No-568), miner from Main Street, Minmi, New South Wales and corner of Mill and Campbelltown Roads, Liverpool, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Liverpool Cemetery and Crematorium, N.S.W, Anglican Section B Row 2 Grave 140, age 47 years 3 months.

John had died tragically, throat cut, on the 8th October 1934.

Born at Mountain Ash, New South Wales on the 1st July 1887 to Michael and Hannah Thomas; husband of Margaret Thomas nee Woods, married 1920, Liverpool, N.S.W., remarried?, died?

John enlisted on the 5th January 1916, age 28 years 6 months, at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 23.6.1916.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 21.11.1916.

Admitted to hospital 18.1.1917 (scabies & septic sores).

Granted leave to England from 11.1.1918 to 30.1.1918.

Wounded in action - 12.4.1918 (GSW right leg).

Invalided to England 21.4.1918.

John arrived home invalided on the 17th November 1918, being discharged on the 3rd March 1919.

Not officially commemorated, but should be.

I would like to see poppies placed at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
