Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 12th October 1917, Sergeant Herbert Ephriam Parkinson M.M., 35th Battalion (Reg No-880), miner from Second Street, Weston, New South Wales, father of one (Leila Catherine, born 1.3.1909, West Wallsend, N.S.W., married 1936, Cessnock, N.S.W. to Edward Hodge, Leila died 22.10.1984, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 75, place of burial unknown), was killed by an enemy artillery shell, 1st Battle of Passchendaele, Passchendaele Campaign, age 34.

Born at Mount Edgerton, Victoria 1883 to James Snr (died 22.9.1918, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 64, no memorial inscription at the C of E portion at Wallsend Cemetery), from Cardiff Road, Wallsend, N.S.W., and Annie Maria Parkinson nee Leman (died 14.4.1930, Cessnock Hospital, N.S.W., age 74, mother of 7?, no memorial inscription at the C of E portion at Wallsend Cemetery); husband of Florence May Parkinson nee Oswald (married 1905, West Wallsend, N.S.W., died 30.3.1962, Kurri Kurri, N.S.W., age?, 45 years a widow, location of grave unknown), from 14 Church Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. (1917) and Aberdare Street, Weston, N.S.W. (1917) and Wollombi Road, Cessnock, N.S.W. (1917) and 7th Street, Weston, N.S.W. (1923). Florence's parents William Oswald Snr (died 1.12.1918, Waratah, N.S.W., age?, no death notice located), living at the Benevolent Home, Waratah, N.S.W., and Catherine Oswald nee Welsh (died 5.8.1913, Minmi, N.S.W., age 60), from Wallsend Road, Minmi, N.S.W., memorial inscription for Herb located at this gravesite. CATHOLIC 1-11. 6, Herb enlisted on the 15th December 1915 at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Wounded in action - 8.6.1917 (GSW right foot, Battle of Messines).

Awarded Military Medal 24.6.1917.

Reported Killed in Action 16.5.1918.

Mr. Parkinson is resting at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Plot XXIII Row F Grave 20.

Herb’s name has been inscribed on the Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial, Federal Park Wallsend War Memorial, Wallsend WW1 Roll of Honor, Kurri Kurri War Memorial, Greta War Memorial, Greta & Branxton Municipal Roll of Honor, Cessnock War Memorial and the Book of Gold.

I have placed poppies at the memorialised Oswald gravesite in remembrance of their son-in-law’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. CATHOLIC 1-11. 6.
