John was the second of eight children of James Mahoney (born 1860 in Ireland) and Mary Mulcahy (born 1864 in Ireland). James and Mary married in Gympie, QLD in 1890 and lived in Gympie, Toowoomba, Brisbane and on the Darling Downs where James was a Farmer and a Labourer.

John was a Carpenter in Beaudesert, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in September 1916. He served as a Private (Service No:3404) with the 4th Pioneer Battalion in France. He was Discharged in December 1919. Brothers Patrick Joseph (Service No:20842) and Daniel (Service No:15709) served in WWI. John served in WWII with the ACMF (Corporal, Service No:Q227794) with 9 Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (1942 - 1945) and brother James Vincent served in the Army (Bombardier, Service No:QX28684).

In 1922 John was a Farmer when he married Mary Hardie (born 1897 at Wallon in QLD) in Ipswich, QLD. By 1925 John and Mary had moved to Thagoona, Rosewood on the Darling Downs in QLD, where John was a Miner. By 1954 John was Mine Deputy at Thagoona, a position he held until his Death in 1974.
