Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Roger North was the eldest of 9 children in the North family. He was employed on the Commonwealth survey staff when he enlisted early in 1915. He was about three months in Gallipoli, where he was promoted to the rank of Lance-Corporal and later in the same campaign to Corporal. It was while fighting in France that he received his next promotion to Sergeant.

North was killed in action on 29 July 1916, and his parents, Francis Jeremy and Fanny Lizzie North, of Stanmore, Rockhampton, Queensland, were advised of the death, not received through official sources, but from their other son, Private Cedric Arnold North. Cedric, a member of the same battalion, stated in a letter received by the parents, 2 months after the event, that his brother was killed by machine gun fire while assaulting a trench at Pozieres, being shot in the stomach and the chest.
