CHARLES ALEXANDER YEEND
Charles Alexander Yeend Reg. No. 6600, third son of George Yeend and Louisa McKim Yeend, nee Smith, of Colton Terrace Magill. He was born in Kensington, South Australia on the 3rd of June 1895. His employment was stated as Salesman, on his enlistment documentation. He had served 2 years as a cadet prior to joining the army in 1916. He became a member of the 10th Infantry Battalion, and sailed from Adelaide aboard HMAT Port Melbourne A16, on 23rd October 1916. He landed in Devonport in England and then on to France on the 5th April 1917. Like his brother Herbert Horace Yeend, he was able to confirm what had happened to a fellow soldier, who was posted as missing. He had been an eyewitness to the death of Ernest Albert Atkinson. On 21st of September 1917 he was severely injured with a gunshot wound to the left thigh and buttock. After being taken to a military hospital in Rouen, he was evacuated to England. He rejoined his unit on 11th October 1918. He was repatriated to Australia via the Takada on 18th July 1919, and discharged from the Army on 19th October 1919. In June 1923 he married Lillian McDonald at Bulls Creek South Australia. As a much respected dairy farmer, in 1936, he nominated for a position on the Australian Dairy Produce Board. He was not successful, and the dairy farmers were not happy, because only four dairy farmers were elected to the 17 man board. One farmer represented West Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. He died on 2nd of June 1961, and is buried in the Centennial Park Cemetery in the general section, AF path 3, Grave 35.
