Born in Beaufort, Victoria in 1892, William was seventh of ten children of Henry Littlejohn Anderson (b1852 in Selkirkshire, Scotland) and Julia Wilkinson (b1854 at Bacchus Marsh, Victoria). Henry immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1855, arriving in Geelong, Victoria on board the Marchioness of Salisbury. Henry was a Farmer at Buangor in 1881 when he and Julia married in Ararat. They lived in Buangor before settling in Trawalla via Beaufort, where they raised their family and Henry was a Farmer.

William was working as an Attendant in a Hospital for the Insane when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. He returned to Trawalla following Discharge, and worked as a Labourer. He was a Farmer in 1920 when he married Emily Lyons (b1893 in Waterloo via Beaufort, Victoria).
