Workers' Compensation Commission

4/9/1915 - enlisted 4/9/1915 - 6982 - 16 Reinforcements - 1 Field Coy Engineers. Gave his occupation as plumber. Service in Egypt. Returned per "Ulysses" discharged medically 16/3/1917 with aortic and mitral heart disease.

Claim against Railway Commissioners.
The Commission gave judgement in the matter of an application by Jessie Alberta Mary McVey, against the Railway Commissioners for New South Wales, in respect of the death of James Richard McVey an employee of respondents, who collapsed and died while at work at the tramway power-house Ultimo, on February 16, 1927. The Commission found that, after considering the facts and medical opinions given in evidence, the deceased did not receive personal injury in the course of his employment and that his death was not caused or accelerated by his work. An award was made in favour of the respondents.

Son of James and Julia MCVEY

Married Jessie Alberta Mary Byrne, 1883 St Peter's Church Woolloomoloo.
Children: Edgar, Raymond, Willliam Andrew Roy, Olive, Amy, Henry, Gordon, Viola, Thelma, Vera.

He was discharged due to aortic and mitral heart disease and at that time his hair was described as iron grey and his figure well built.

James was a member of the LOL No 257 Lodge, the Masonic  Lodge No 99 U.G.L. NSW and the No 383 Daughters of Euniskallen LOL.

PLUMBER FOUND DEAD
Early hist night James Richard McVey, 45, plumber, who lived at Ernest street, North Sydney, was found dead at Ultimo power house. It is understood that McVey was working at the place and was found by the night-watchman. Life was pronounced extinct at Sydney Hospital and the body taken to the morgue. Regent Street police are investigating.

James Richard McVey, plumber, 65 years of age, employed by the Railway Commissioners, after getting down a ladder from where he was at work, at the tramway power-house, Ultimo, collapsed and died.  McVey left a wife and 11 children, two of whom were invalids.

Before the Worker's Compensation Commission yesterday, Jessie Alberta Mary McVey, of Ernest Street, North Sydney, claimed £800 compensation from the Railway Commissioners for the benefit of herself and three children who were dependent upon McVey's earnings, which averaged £6 per week.  Respondents denied liability.  Judgment was reserved.
