At the age of 32, John enlisted into the 1st AIF on the 9th of December 1915 in Adelaide, SA and allotted the service number 4085 and posted to B Company, 2nd Depot Battalion in Mitcham Camp.
He listed his mother, Mrs Annie Byrnes, of 112 Faythe Street, Wexford, Ireland, as his next of kin.

He was then posted to the 1st Depot Battalion before being transferred to the 27th Battalion, 10th Reinforcements.

John embarked from Adelaide on board RMS Mongolia on the 9th of March 1916 and disembarked in Pt Suez in mid April.
After only 4 weeks of training John embarked from Alexandria on the 10th of May on board HMT Scotian and disembarked in Marseilles 8 days later.

He spent the next 4 months fighting in France before he suffered an accidental Gun Shot Wound to his left thigh and was evacuated to England.
John rejoined his Battalion in June 1917.

He was wounded again 3 months later, suffered shrapnel wound to his left leg and was evacuated to England.
John embarked from England on board HT Llanstephan Castle on the 15th of February 1918, disembarked in Melbourne on the 16th of April and entrained the following day to Adelaide.

John was discharged from the AIF, medically unfit, on the 1st of May 1918.
IF, medically unfit, on the 1st of May 1918 and awarded the British War & Victory Medals.
