Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

94 years ago today, on the Monday afternoon of the 30th September 1929, Engineer Sergeant John Thomson Fraser, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2784), motor mechanic from 32 Perkins Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and Grant Street, West Maitland, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 45. PRESBYTERIAN-2NE. 11.

Born at Newcastle, New South Wales on the 7th February 1884 to James and Annie Fraser nee Fleming of 32 Perkins Street, Newcastle, New South Wales; husband of Lucy Fraser nee Douglas (married 1921, Sydney, N.S.W., died 6.10.1965, Maitland, N.S.W., 36 years a widow), John enlisted on the 28th September 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 25th November 1916.
Admitted to hospital 9.4.1918 (trench feet), 27.8.1918 (gassed).

Furlough granted from the 9.5.1918 to the 23.5.1918.
Wounded in action - 22.8.1918 (gassed).

John did not return home until the 9th January 1920, being discharged on the 23rd February 1920.

Mr. Fraser’s name has been inscribed on the Masonic Lodge Harmony No-15 U.G.L. Roll of Honour and the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Newcastle) Roll of Honour.

The tragic circumstances of John’s death were reported.

I have placed a 1914-1918 WAR label at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Not officially commemorated.

His mother Annie Fraser, who lived (at the time) to be Newcastle's oldest citizen, and a photo of 32 Perkins Street, where John resided with his parents.
