Died on this date – 5th May…… Ernest Christian Theodor Eggeling was born at Coolgardie, Western Australia on 28th December, 1896.

(Note: “Theodor” spelling as listed on Roll of Honour information completed by his father. The Australian War Memorial, CWGC & National Archives have the name spelled as “Theodore”)

 

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 28th December, 1916 as a 20 year old, single, Shop Assistant from Esperance, Western Australia.

Private Ernest Christian Theodore (spelling as per Embarkation Roll) Eggeling, Service number 3053, embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Miltiades (A28) on 29th January, 1917. He was admitted to Ship’s Hospital from 6th March until 12th March, 1917. Private Eggeling disembarked at Devonport, England on 27th March, 1917.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

On 28th March, 1917 Private Eggeling was marched in to A.I.F. Details at Fovant, Wiltshire.

He was admitted sick to Fovant Hospital on 5th April, 1917 & discharged on 13th April, 1917 suffering from Influenza.

Private Eggeling was marched out from Fovant to 11th Training Battalion at Durrington, Wiltshire on 18th April, 1917.

On 24th April, 1917 Private Eggeling was admitted to Fargo Military Hospital – seriously ill with Broncho-pneumonia.

 

Private Ernest Christian Theodore Eggeling died at 4.45 p.m. on 5th May, 1917 from Measles & Broncho – pneumonia at Fargo Military Hospital.

He was buried in Durrington Cemetery, Wiltshire where 140 other WW1 War Graves are located.
