Jack was the eldest of twelve children of William John McCredden (b1863 in Terang, Victoria) and Margaret Ann Wylie (b1858 in Mokey Gully, Linton, Victoria). William - a Farmer at Colack - and Margaret married in 1886 in St Arnaud, Wimmera, Victoria. William and Margaret settled in the region, where William was a Farmer at Reedy Creek, Birchip in the Wimmera Region of Victoria.

Jack was a Stockman in Charleville, QLD in March 1916 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:2105) with 42nd Infantry battalion. He was KiA in Belgium in July 1917. Eight of Jack's brothers enlisted, with four passing selection and serving in WWI. Two brothers were also KiA - Albert Richard and Ernest James.
