Son of John Vine Hall and Alice Hall of Union Street, North Sydney, NSW.

Brother of Austin Pickard Vine-Hall, returned to Australia on 23 June 1919 having served with the 55th Battalion; and Noel Francis Vine-Hall who died of wounds on 3 June 1915 while serving with the 13th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Lone Pine Memorial, Panel 36.

Previously apprenticed with George Angus Sly, Solicitors of Sydney, NSW for five years.

Returned to Australia on 31 July 1918 aboard HT Malta disembarking on 28 Spetember at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney
