Biography

"OUR HEROES. LATE PRIVATE CHAPMAN.

News has been received by the parents of Private Robert Chapman, 8th reinforcements, 50th Battalion (who reside in Wright street, Adelaide), of his death in action in France on October 16. He enlisted just after the referendum on conscription, and sailed from South Australia on December 16, 1916. He had been in the trenches, with the exception of three rests, since June. He was educated at the Rose Park School and Hayward's Academy, East terrace. Private Chapman, whose age at the time of enlistment was 17 years, was an employee of "The Daily Herald." He won the esteem and liking of all his workmates, and his loss will be much regretted." - from the Adelaide Daily Herald 08 Nov 1917 (nla.gov.au)

"OUR HEROES. LATE PRIVATE CHAPMAN.

By inadvertence the name by which he was known among his comrades (Robert) was given as that of the late Private Merlin T. Chapman, of Rundle street east, Adelaide, yesterday." - from the Adelaide Daily Herald 09 Nov 1917 (nla.gov.au)
