3864 Percy James Hooper was a private in the 4th Pioneer Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces.
On the 13th of June 1917 Percy James Hooper embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on the HMAT Hororata. He was only twenty-seven when he embarked for service abroad.
The 4th Pioneer Battalion was a group of soldiers who were always up the front of the battle area. They were essentially light military combat engineers who would develop and enhance the protection and mobility for supported troops. They constructed defensive positions, created command posts and dugouts. They prepared different types of defences like barbed wire fencing. Sometimes they would attack with different devices including the Bangalore Torpedo.
On the 11th of August, 1918 Percy receieved a gunshot wound to the head. Sadly he died of his wounds the same day, and was buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France - By Lachlan Raves
