Died on this date - 26th September.......Eric Alexander McCleery was born at Camberwell, Victoria in 1899.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) as an 18 year old Clerk from Canterbury, Victoria.

Private McCleery, Service number 3354, departed from Melbourne on 22nd December, 1917 with 37th Battalion & after a stop in Egypt arrived in England for further training on 14th February, 1918. He was sent to 10th Training Battalion at Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire, England on 14th February, 1918 & was appointed Acting Corporal on 26th Battalion. He then joined Officers’ Training School at Candahar Barracks, Wiltshire for 5 days then joined 9th Training Battalion at Fovant, Wiltshire on 7th May, 1918 with the rank of Private.


Private Eric Alexander McCleery joined 37th Battalion at the front on 9th June, 1918. He was wounded in action on 1st September, 1918.

He was invalided to Wales & admitted to 3rd Western General Hospital at Cardiff, Wales on 6th September, 1918. He had a large flesh wound & later gangrene developed & his leg was amputated to mid thigh.


Private Eric Alexander McCleery died at 3.30 am on 26th September, 1918 & was buried in Cathays Cemetery, Cardiff, Wales where 7 other Australians from WW1 are buried.
