84 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 5th November 1941, Private Hugh George (Edwin) Hobden M.I.D., 34th Battalion (Reg No-2588), labourer from Maule's Creek, Boggabri, New South Wales and Pine Avenue, South Cardiff, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 44. ANGLICAN 2-146. 37.
Born at Boggabri, New South Wales on the 7th June 1897 as Hugh George to Robert Alfred, died 30.6.1947, Narrabri, N.S.W., age 99, no funeral or cemetery located, and Sarah Ann Hobden nee Cupples, died 28.1.1918, Narrabri, N.S.W., age?, no funeral or cemetery located; husband of Edna Aldine (Adeline, Aldene) Hobden nee Urquhart, married 1923, Wickham, N.S.W., died 3.9.1943, Wallsend, N.S.W., age 37, sleeping here, from Pine Avenue, South Cardiff, N.S.W., Hugh enlisted on the 25th July 1916 as George Edwin at Armidale, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board SS Napier on the 17th November 1916.
Disembarked Devonport, England 29.1.1917.
Admitted to hospital 6.4.1917 (bronchitis).
Wounded in action - 1.7.1917 (GSW left leg, mild, Messines, Belgium), 15.6.1918 (GSW arm), 22.8.1918 (GSW side, near Bray-sur-Somme, France).
Granted leave to England from 6.11.1918 to 22.11.1918.
Mentioned in Despatches.
Awarded, and promulgated, 'London Gazette' No. 31448 (11th July 1919); 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 124 (30th October 1919).
Recommendation date: 7th February 1919.
Commenced return to Australia 12.6.1919.
Hugh arrived home on the 10th August 1919, being discharged on the 18th September 1919.
Mr. Hobden’s name has been inscribed on the Baan Baa Roll of Honour WW1, Boggabri War Memorial and the Coonabarabran War Memorial Clock Tower.
I have placed poppies at Hugh’s refurbished gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
An individual Memorial Wall Plaque has been placed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall by persons unknown.
