William Gambie was born on the 10th of January 1896, London England. He grew up in the Lime House, London England at 30 Lockleys Street. He lived with his father, George Gambie, while living at the Lime House. William went to school and graduated high school. He then got a job as a laborer.

 

When he turned 19, he enlisted in the 32nd battalion of the AIF on the 7th July 1915. He sailed to Egypt on  the HMAT Geelong in November. William was transfered to the 5th divisional artillary and posted to the 54th Battery on the 15th of March 1916. He then embarked Alexandria to join The British Expeditionary Force on the 20th June 1916. He then later disembarked at Marseilles, France 30th June 1916. On the 3rd of April 1917, William was wounded in the left ear and evacuated to England.

William was medically unstable after his serious injury to his ear so he took a long journey back home and boarded the HS Demosthenes on the 27th of July 1917, which took him to Melbourne for onwards travel back to Adelaide on the 12th November 1917. After William returned home and had many difficulties with his medical conditions. In later life William started to lose some of his hearing in his left ear and his eyesight worsened. William then got extremely sick and was transferred to the Perth hospital. They ran multiple tests and found out he had bronchitis, a chest infection, was overweight and had right chest pains. William sadly passed away in April 1967 at the Penrose hospital at the age of 69.
