Charles Victor Hunt; my Pop
Charles Victor Hunt (my paternal grandfather) was born in Berwick, Victoria, Australia on 25 May 1885.
Charles joined the Victorian Rangers, a Volunteer Militia Unit, in 1902 and served with them until their disbandment in 1907.
On December 15th 1915, Charles went to Melbourne and enlisted in the A.I.F. in World War 1 (WW1). On this enrolment form he was described as being 5 feet 6¼ inches tall, weighing 118 lbs (53.6kg) with a fair complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.
After training in Australia, Charles was sent to Egypt, travelling on the H.M.A.S. Suffolk which departed for overseas on April 1st 1916) and then onto France with the 57th Battalion. After suffering from severe pneumonia and pleurisy, he was transferred to general duties in May 1917 at the AA Hospital in Dartford, Kent.
Whilst there, he transferred from the 57th Battalion to the Australian Amy Medical Corps.
Whilst in Kent, Charles met Alice Baldwin, a Nurse, and married her on 12 March 1917.
Charles was transferred to London and promoted to Corporal, his rank at discharge from the Army.
Charles and Alice had a son, Kenneth Charles George HUNT who was born in
Kent, England in December 1919.
Charles and Alice returned to Australia in April 1920 aboard The Demosthenes and went to live at Swan Hill, (My dad’s notes state they settled on a block of land situated between Woorinen and Nyah).
Tragically, baby Kenneth died on May 16th 1920.
On November 6th 1921, Walter John (Jack) HUNT (my Uncle) was born.
There are mixed stories with regard to the disease, but Alice contracted either Typhoid Fever or Tuberculosis and died in Swan Hill on 17 November 1921, aged 41 years. Her death was just 11 days after the birth of her second child, Jack.
This left Charles at the age of 36 years widowed and mourning the death of his wife and son, and faced with raising an 11 day old child single-handedly.
A Nurse named Violet Irene Boscowitch (nee Marshall) had nursed both Alice and Kenneth during their illness. Violet, who had married Joseph Boscowitch (also
known as Joseph Bostock) in England on 17 June 1919, was apparently now widowed due to Joseph committing suicide by jumping into the Murray River and presumably drowning.
Charles and Violet became romantically involved, and were married at St John’s in Toorak, Victoria on 6 November 1923. Uncle Jack was 2 years old to the day.
It is believed Charles was a Carpenter in Woorinen for a time, and also owned and operated a vineyard.
He went on to enlist in WW2 in June 1940. He was 55 years of age but lowered his age to 42. He gave his occupation as a fruit grower.
He was in the 2nd RRD (? Redbank Reinforcement Depot) Royal Park Unit, and was later transferred to the Grave Maintenance Detail. He was discharged from the Army in June 1947, when he returned to Woorinen.
Later the family moved to Swan Hill where Charles worked for several years as a barman. He enjoyed playing lawn bowls.
Charles and Violet had three children, Albert Leslie, Roy Marshall and Dorothy Irene.
Charles Victor Hunt died in Swan Hill on 24 May 1965, the day before his 80th birthday.
