29 Jul 1918: | Wounded Private, 4463, Bert’s battalion was stationed on the Somme in early 1918 where the battalion was involved in the battle of Morlancourt and the battle of Hamel. At the end of this, the battalion moved back to Blangy-Tronville area for a rest on 20 July 1918. By 28 July, some of the battalion were detailed on cable burying parties until 30 July. It was on one of these details that Bert was severely wounded on 29 July 1918. They were spotted by a German observation balloon which resulted in them being shelled with Bert receiving a shrapnel wound in the back. He was transported to hospital (Canadian General Hospital) by 6th Australian Field Ambulance and was operated on. On 12 August, he was transferred to England and on 15 August was in King George Military Hospital. Bert did not return to the war due to his injuries and returned to Australia on the Karmala in January 1919. He disembarked in Australia on 15 February 1919 and was discharged from army on 11 April 1919. | |
