Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Private Leon Herbert William King (Service No:87) enlisted in the AIF on 11 September 1915 and was attached to 1st Remount Unit on 12 November 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Egypt on board Transport A67 Orsova. Private King returned to Melbourne on 9 March 1917 and was attached to 1st Remount Unit when he was Discharged later that year.

Len was born in Macarthur, Victoria in 1885, third of eight children of William John King (b1856 at Retreat Station, Casterton, Victoria) and Mary Ann Matheson (b1860 in Lethbridge, Victoria). William and Mary married in 1878 and lived in Heywood, Hotspur, Macarthur, Ormeo, Bairnsdale, Casterton and Melbourne, where William worked as a Coach Builder, Wheelright and Labourer.

Len was working as a Butcher in 1908 in Orbost when he married Gertrude Ethel May Brown (b1887 in Bega, NSW). Len and Gertrude lived in Orbost, where Len worked as a Butcher before moving to Melbourne in 1914. Len was a Butcher in 1915 when he enlisted in the AIF, and on his return and Discharge in 1917, he separated from Gertrude. Len divorced Gertrude in 1924, gaining custody of their three surviving children - Gertrude was killed in a traffic accident in Yallourn in 1927. In his Divorce Papers, Len stated he was a Blacksmith and Steel Worker, although the Electoral Rolls give his occupation as Boilermaker. In 1928 in Melbourne, Len married his second wife, Mary (Molly) Margaret Kelly (b1896 at Tower Hill, Victoria) - Molly was working in Melbourne as a Telegraphist. Len and Molly settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Len worked as a Boilermaker. Len died in 1960 and Molly in 1979.
