Thomas Jones
THOMAS JONES (1867-1949) born at Yass, son of Joseph and Eleanor Jones nee Potter. Enlisted as Private 1676, 56th Battalion, C Coy., 1st AIF on January 25th, 1916 at Cootamundra and entering the AIF Training camp there. He sailed from Sydney on board the HMAT Ceremic A40 on April 14th, 1916, arriving at Alexandria. He then boarded the Arcadian for England where he trained at Larkhill, and by September 1916 found himself in France and Boulogne in November. He returned to Australia on board the HT Militades from Devonport, England on May 4th, 1917 after suffering a serious knee injury. Previously he had been by his horse and the same knee had been injured by a cricket ball. Problems with the knee became more serious in France when he hurt the same knee on field service. He arrived home on July 5th, and discharged August 29th. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
