Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
61 years ago today, on the 21st May 1963, Corporal Irvine Alexander Lindsay, 17th Battalion (Reg No-2163), engineer from C/O-Broken Hill Pty Co Ltd, Broken Hill, New South Wales and Hamilton?, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 65. CATHOLIC 2-34. 63.
Born at Broken Hill, New South Wales on the 25th November 1897 to John Alexander M and Elizabeth (Eliza) Lindsay of Crebert Street, Mayfield, N.S.W.; husband of Ruth Margaret D Lindsay nee Dial (married 1923, died 22.4.1989, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, sleeping here), Irvine enlisted on the 30th June 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on the 30th September 1915.
Wounded in action - 9.10.1917 (GSW hand & leg).
Admitted to hospital 23.10.1917 (scabies), 28.11.1917 (boils, left arm), 16.4.1918 (trench feet), 9.1.1919 (influenza).
Granted furlough to England from 6.5.1918 to 20.5.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 7.4.1919.
Irvine arrived home on the 20th May 1919, being discharged on the 12th July 1919.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, wounds, returning home, etc.
Mr. Lindsay’s name has been inscribed on the Broken Hill Barrier District Roll of Honour, Tighes Hill Methodist Church Roll of Honour and the A. Goninan and Company Roll of Honor.
I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Irvine’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
An individual Memorial Plaque has been placed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
Not officially commemorated.
