Private William John Dennis (Service No:3287) served four years wih Senior Cadets before enlisting in the AIF on 29 July 1915 with 8th Depot Battalion. Private Dennis was attached to 6th Infantry Battalion on 1 October 1915 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Private Dennis served with the 57th and 58th Infantry Battalions in Egypt, and was attached to the 57th Infantry Battalion on 17 June 1916 when he embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles (and service on the Western Front) on board HT Transylvania. Private Dennis embarked from England for Melbourne on 8 March 1919 on board HT Trasos Montes, and was attached to 57th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 23 August 1919.
William was born in Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Victoria in 1897, eldest of five children of William Frederick Ernest Dennis (b1875 in Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Victoria) and Frances Dudley Harris (b1877 in Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Victoria). William Snr and Frances married in 1896 in Bendigo, and settled in Eaglehawk where they raised their family and William Snr was a Hotel Keeper.
William was working in Eaglehawk as an Electrician when he enlisted in the Army in 1915, and following his Discharge in 1919 returned to Eaglehawk. William was working as an Electrician in Eaglehawk in 1925 when he married Marjorie Minnie Sampson (b1898 in Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Victoria). William and Marjorie lived in Eaglehawk until the late 1930s when they moved to Castlemaine, and William worked as an Electrician until retirement. William died in 1976 and Marjorie died in 1978.
