Lieutenant Thomas Roy Macgarvey (Service No:V148386) initially served in WWI as a Staff Sergeant (Service No:19333) attached to No 3 Section Sea Transport AAMC as a Masseur. S/Sgt Macgarvey served on Sea Transport Duty (England/Australia) from 15 July 1916 to 14 July 1919. In WWII, Lieutenant Macgarvey served (7 July 1942 to 13 December 1944) as a Physiotherapist with 107 Convalescent Depot, and was attached to 114 Convalescent Depot on Termination of his Appointment.
Roy was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1893, eldest of three children of Paul Macgarvey (b1863 in Dundee, Scotland) and Catherine (Kate) Cecilia Wookey (b1870 at Snake Valley via Ballarat, Victoria). Paul was a Jute Preparer in Scotland when he immigrated in 1882, arriving in Cooktown, QLD en route for Melbourne on board the Renfrewshire. Paul (a Tanner) and Kate married in 1892 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and Paul worked as a Tanner and Grocer - in the early 1900s Kate was a Greengrocer. In 1930, Paul was reported missing when the SS Karoola, on which he was a passenger from Melbourne, docked in Sydney - '.... it is supposed by police that he fell overboard' (The Sun; 21 July 1930).
Roy was working as a Masseur in Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF in 1916, and in 1918 in Melbourne married Harriet Ann Little (b1895 in Korumburra, Victoria). Following his Discharge, Roy and Harriet settled in Melbourne, where they raised their son and Roy worked as a Masseur, Physiotherapist and Railway Employee. Harriet died in 1972 and Roy in 1976.
