Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War memorialised at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 6th November 1916, Private William Sutcliffe, referred to as Bill, 10th Battalion (Reg No-3931), clerk from Broadmeadow, New South Wales, was Killed in Action, age 40. Place and cause of death unknown.
Born at Bradford, Yorks, England about 1876 to John (station master, Broadmeadow, N.S.W., died 21.7.1923, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 73) of 54 Donald Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and St James Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., and Mary Ann Sutcliffe nee Walker (died 9.1.1916, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 67 of "Cranferd", Samdon Street, Hamilton, N.S.W.; husband of Ellen Sutcliffe nee Hicks (married 1894, Wickham, N.S.W., died 14.7.1968, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 94, nearly 52 years a widow), Note: all my information regarding wife Ellen Sutcliffe could be incorrect as service record states not married, Bill enlisted on the 17th August 1915 at Adelaide, South Australia.
Unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board RMS Malwa on the 2nd December 1915.
Admitted to hospital 17.3.1916 (phimosis), 13.10.1916 (not stated).
Wounded in action - 21.8.1916 (SW or GSW right thigh).
Bill’s name has been inscribed on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France.
Place of Association - Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
Mr. Sutcliffe’s name has also been inscribed on the Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll, St. Peter's Church Memorial Trees, Book of Gold, Adelaide National War Memorial, South Australian National War Memorial and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at the memorialised Sutcliffe gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Bill for God, King & Country. ANGLICAN 1-35. 54.
